What is window film?

Window film, commonly called window tint is a self-adhesive polyester film that is applied to glass surfaces to manage a variety of problems.

Window tint is made up of adhesive, layers of high-quality, strong, clear, polyester films. A layer of dyed, metalized, ceramic or low e film. These layers are then laminated together by strong adhesives to form one window film.

Film types & uses

Window film can be categorized into the following film types,

These film types have many practical uses in residential & commercial applications. Window film Innovations can help you chose the right film to suit your needs. Lets take a closer look...

Solar Control Films

Solar film

Frosted, Decorative & architectual vinyls

Safety, Security & Anti Graffiti Film

Traditional solar control window films are constructed of a dyed or metalised active layer, they can be coloured, reflective or non reflective. Solar films reduce the amount of heat, light & UV following into a building though its windows by reflecting & absorbing the suns energy. These films are most commonly identified as window tinting.

Benefits

Limiting heat gain & loss by adding window film to glass greatly reduces temperature swings inside a building, intern this lowers energy consumption & costs by taking the load off heating & cooling systems. Lowering the amount of sunlight & ultra violet light ( UV ) entering a room reduces glare & fading, thus protecting occupants & furnishing form some of the suns damaging effects. Top of page

Great For

  • Reducing a buildings heat-gain, energy usage & energy costs.

  • Creating reflective or non reflective day time privacy.

  • Protecting people, furnishings & fittings from UV damage & fading.

  • Reducing internal glare & squinting at screens, from direct sunlight or light reflected off internal surfaces such as tiles.

  •  Enhancing a buildings appearance & improving the internal comfort zone

Dual reflective hybrid films are constructed of an active layer of reflective metallised film joined to an active layer of non reflective film. This creates a high preforming window film, with a strong tinted external appearance, low absorption & low internal reflectivity & natural tone.

Benefits

Having low absorption, high performance and low internal reflectivity has not previously been achieved with one film. This makes for a versatile window film with all the benefits of traditional solar film that is suitable for installing on all glass types. Top of page

Great for

  • Reflective daytime privacy & low reflective inside out views

  • Highest heat rejection of any window film

  • Safely tinting double glazed & laminated windows

  • Creating one way mirrored glass on internal glazing

  • Enhancing a buildings appearance with a strong dark tinted look

Ceramic solar films are constructed of an active layer of nano ceramic film joined to layers of clear film. Ceramic films have the heat blocking performance of solar films whilst reaming optically clear in appearance.

Benefits

Looking in can be just as important as looking out. Ceramic window films have high heat reduction properties , block UV & Inferred light, whilst remaining optically clear in appearance. Thus allowing them to give some key benefits of traditional solar films without altering a buildings appearance. Top of page

Great For

  • Heat reduction, energy savings, UV & inferred light reduction

  • Non tinted appearance

  • Apartments & satisfying body corporate requirements

  • Museums, galleries, heritage buildings, car dealerships

  • Retail shopfronts, cafes ,hairdressers

Low E Window Filmssometimes called double glazed films are an exciting innovation in window film technology. They are constructed of an active metalised layer of film joined to a active layer of Low e coating. The active layer of metalised film works like a solar film by absorbing & reflecting the suns energy outward.

The E in Low E stands for emissivity,  which is material’s ability to emit radiant energy.

The Low E coating works by significantly limiting radiant heats ability to pass through the glass from the inside of a building to the outside. Thus retaining internal winter warmth like double glazing.

Benefits

The innovation of low E films has taken window film to a new level of energy efficiency. Low E films create an energy management system for a building in every season. This drastically reduces energy consumption & cost. High preforming low E films like EcoLux 70 can out preform the energy benefits of clear double glazing. Low e film is retrofitted to existing windows and on average costs, 2/3 less than glass replacement with double glazed windows. Low E films are available in low reflective optically clear and reflective versions.Top of page

Great for

  • Maximizing Energy efficiency of existing windows, lowering energy use & costs

  • Comfort levels, eliminates hot & cold spots, creates temperate indoor spaces year round

  • Renovators looking to improve a buildings energy star rating

  • re purposing inefficient windows without replacing them

  • Double glazing alternative, comparable performance,  approximately 1/3 the cost of double glazing

Safety films are constructed of clear strong polyester layers of film, they are thicker than solar films & use an impact resistant adhesive. The active polyester layer of safety film & adhesive holds glass together when it breaks. They are designed to with stand accidental glass breakage. Safety films can be clear or tinted in appearance.

Benefits

Safety window films are used to upgrade plate glass into safety glass & meet Australian Safety Standard 2208. When plate glass, also called float or annealed glass , breaks it does so into large  jutted pieces. Broken plate glass is sharp & very dangerous, It can inflict serious injury's on a person.

With safety film applied to the inside of a plate glass window, when it it breaks, the glass remains stuck to the adhesive on the film keeping the broken pieces in the frame. For example If the breakge is caused by a person falling into the window on the inside their body is pressing against the film rather than the glass at the point of impact. This greatly reduces the likelihood of serious injury.

Plate glass is found in pre 1996 public buildings & is currently the most common glass used in residential homes. Top of page

Window film innovations recently conducted a safety film test on plate glass windows.  Click here to watch the test video.

Great for

  • Protecting people from serious injury by turning dangerous plate glass into safety glass

  • Upgrading existing plate glass to meet Australian Safety Standard 2208

  • Meeting Family day care & child care requirements

  • Protecting young children in homes from accidental glass breakage

Security films are constructed of clear layers of polyester films, they are thicker & stronger than safety films & contain multiple layers of film to increase tear resistance. They are used for protection from intentional glass breakage & extreme weather events.

Benefits

Glass is often a buildings weakest link. Adding security window film to glass is an excellent way of protecting property, valuables & people from deliberate glass breakage. Security window films work by firstly increasing the breaking strain of the glass & secondly by holding the glass together when does it break. Security film is used to prevent intrusion in a robbery or break & enter attempt. They protect people from flying projectiles during extreme weather such as cyclones & hurricanes. Security films are widely used globally to prevent flying glass injuries during bomb blasts & explosions. Window film innovations senior installer is an expert security film applicator. Top of page

Great For

  • Protecting a buildings occupants from injury during an explosion or storm

  • Preventing intrusion during an attempted robbery

  • Protecting valuables property & people

  • Deterring repeated intrusion attempts

  • Government & Defence Buildings, homes, retail stores, banks, police stations

Anti Graffiti films are similar in appearance & construction to safety & security films, their key difference is in their removable adhesive & high gloss top coat. They are used to protect glass from vandalism & graffiti.

Benefits

Unfortunately vandalism has become part of our society. Glass is often the target of vandals unsightly & offensive graffiti .The high gloss top coat on anti graffiti window film is easily cleaned of spray paint, maker pens & other marking substances. In the case of deliberate scratching the film acts as a protective coating for the glass. The low tact glue then makes it easy to remove & replace the film without causing damage to the glass.

Although not a solution to vandalism, anti graffiti film presents a less costly, less time consuming option to glass replacement. Top of page

Great for

  • Protecting glass from paint & scratch graffiti

  • Public transport, buses, trams, trains

  • Unguarded glass buildings, bus stops, train stations, tram stops, retail shop fronts

  • Reducing cost & disruption of glass replacement

Frosted window films are constructed of vinyl film & pressure sensitive adhesive. They're opaque in colour & emulate sandblasted or etched glass. Frosted film is used for creating privacy in homes & offices day & night by obscuring the view through both sides of the glass.

Benefits

Privacy is important & so is natural light. Frosted window films are an excellent option for creating privacy inside a home or building without blocking natural light. Frosted film gives glass a modern, clean  & contemporary appearance. They are highly effective as a solid sheet or band & can also be cut to create boarders vision strips & patterns. Frosted films can be printed on, logos artworks & other graphics can be added to give your glass panels a vibrate unique custom finish.Top of page

Decorative & Architectural Film

Decorative & architectural films are constructed of vinyl. They can contain factory made patterns or be a single solid colour. They are used for adding vibrancy to glass, creating privacy, making signs & decals & completely obscuring the view through glass.

Benefits

Clear glass can some times be boring, unsightly or reveal things you don't want others to see. Adding decorative films to glass can create instant patterns & privacy. Solid vinyl films unlike frosted window films, block significant amounts of natural light making them capable of completely obscuring the view through a window. This can be important when public & private areas are divided by glass. For example a shops crowded store room may be visible from the retail area or a kitchens appliances visible form the restaurant or cafe floor. Top of page
